It's 6:30PM and as I make my way to the „Altes Schützenhaus“ where the Line-Dancing Ladies of Beckenried meet every fortnight, my thoughts race ahead of me.. I wonder how many of them will be there?? When it comes to dancing, i have two - no, make it four - left feet. Simple hand-leg coordination moves take me forever to master.. Wonder where I was when "Rhythm" was being handed out? Perhaps busy eating chocolate somewhere..
I walk up the wooden staircase and open the door.. there's about 20 of them.. OK.. do i need to make a fool of myself in front of all of them? And then again.. What's wrong in giving these ladies something to laugh about.
The teacher "Vroni" tells me that I can just watch; join when i feel like & do as much as I want to. She starts the music, we all stand in a circle and join hands. I don't understand Swiss-Deutsch yet, so i try to watch Vroni's legs & mimic the movements the entire time.. Then a sudden realisation.. have to listen to the music & pay attention to the beats too.. that's the soul of the dance, else it's no different than exercise.. Just as i feel i've mastered it, Vroni breaks from the group to stop the music. We're moving on to the next one.. What???
The ladies are kind enough to let me stand in the front row, so i can easily follow Vroni upfront. Or is it that they can all see me & learn "how to not dance"?.. Anyways.. I'm here, might as well Just Shake it..
She shows the basic Grape-Vine, which i can get my arms around or rather feet around.. That was the easy part.. It's uphill all the way from there, we move on to Shuffles, Heel twists, Cha-Cha, Heel & Toe Struts.. the same story everytime.. Just when i think I've cracked it, we move on to the next one. Gosh.. Graduate level Math came easier!
We do about 10-12 different dance sequences and before i realise, the hour has gone by already.. i'm told later that we did more sequences today than they normally do. Perhaps the ladies were trying to make me feel better.. Bless their Hearts!
As i walk back home, I realise that it wasn't easy, but totally worth it. Perhaps i should have some Prosecco before my next class to make it easier
