This beautiful clay tiled Kitchen floor
Was quite a different story before
Underneath the worn old laminate
stones, rubble and earth await
Hammer, Jackhammer and Spade
become our Tools of Trade
As we start to Cleanup
In order to move on to the Buildup
Well.. it's kinda hard to make a rhyme for construction work, so i guess I'll switch to Prose.
Under the old laminate floor, we found concrete on parts of the floor and going with our gut, we decide to get rid of it. So we made ourselves busy with the electric jack hammer for a weekend.. And lo & behold, not only stones but "Rocks" emerge from underneath.. Rocks, on which 400 years ago, this house was built. This hilly part of the Alps is very Rocky.. the earth is only about 1m deep and then its all Rocky bed. Instead of breaking these huge rocks, we decide to leave them as they are, even when it means that we need to get creative with our flooring around these Rocks. Lukas gives a new name to the House.. from "House Unterrüti" to "House on the Rocks"!!
As we continue hammering away on the concrete, we find other interesting material: bottles, metal stuff -- everything that one didn't need got buried under... Out of Sight-- Out of Mind!
After all the concrete is out and we're onto the earthen floor, we sort all the stones we found underneath. Lukas selects a couple to be laid on the eastern & western entrances -- Perfect stepping stones into the "House on the Rocks".
Since our home is a Heritage property, we opt for only Natural building material like wood fibres, and handmade clay tiles.
The Kitchen floor buildup Timeline: August 2nd 2017 to Oct 22nd 2017
Our beautiful handmade clay tile floor is finally ready... A unique mosaic of different earth tones with twin tiles is an eye-catcher. After the grout is dried up.. we walk barefoot on this unique floor with its natural unevenness and rough structure. Perfect for a foot massage to rejuvenate those tired muscles!!!
